Water Purity Kit

The USM Division of Industry and Community Network (BJIM) awarded “The microscale water-purity-tests-kits for the secondary schools in Penang“ project which was led by Dr. Lee Hooi Ling and her team that include Prof. Dr. Norita Mohamed and Dr. Lim Gin Keat in August, 2014. The community partner in this project is the American Chemical Society (ACS) Malaysia International Chemical Sciences Chapters. ACS is a well-established international professional chemistry organisation and its Malaysian international chapter was set up in early 2014.

The highlight of this project is a series of microscale chemistry-water-purity experiments using apparatus assembled from materials that are easily accessible and economical in the market. Three secondary schools from Penang namely SMK Taman Perwira, SMJK Phor Tay and SMK Hamid Khan involving 222 students and 3 teachers participated in these outreach programmes. Since the completing of the BJIM project in July, 2015, Dr. Lee and her team has still actively involved in the exhibitions especially in the Penang International Science Fair. There is still on-going improvement in the kits based on the previous users’ feedback.
